The History of Outdoor Water Fountains

The History of Outdoor Water Fountains The translation of hundreds of classic Greek documents into Latin was commissioned by the learned Pope Nicholas V who ruled the Church in Rome from 1397 until 1455. Embellishing Rome and making it the worthy capital of the Christian world was at the core of his objectives. In 1453 the Pope instigated the repairing of the Aqua Vergine, an ancient Roman aqueduct which had carried fresh drinking water into the city from eight miles away. Building a mostra, an imposing commemorative fountain built by ancient Romans to memorialize the entry point of an aqueduct, was a custom revived by Nicholas V. The architect Leon Battista Alberti was directed by the Pope to put up a wall fountain where we now find the Trevi Fountain. The water which eventually furnished the Trevi Fountain as well as the renown baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navona flowed from the modified aqueduct which he had renovated.

A Short History of the First Outdoor Garden Fountains

A Short History of the First Outdoor Garden Fountains Water fountains were originally practical in purpose, used to bring water from rivers or springs to towns and villages, supplying the residents with clean water to drink, wash, and cook with. To generate water flow through a fountain until the end of the 1800’s, and produce a jet of water, mandated gravity and a water source such as a creek or lake, positioned higher than the fountain. The elegance and wonder of fountains make them ideal for traditional memorials. The common fountains of modern times bear little similarity to the first water fountains. Simple stone basins created from local rock were the first fountains, used for spiritual ceremonies and drinking water.Short History First Outdoor Garden Fountains 8418126531.jpg The original stone basins are presumed to be from about 2000 BC. The first fountains used in ancient civilizations relied on gravity to manipulate the circulation of water through the fountain. The placement of the fountains was determined by the water source, which is why you’ll commonly find them along reservoirs, waterways, or streams. The people of Rome began building elaborate fountains in 6 BC, most of which were bronze or stone masks of animals and mythological heroes. The Romans had an elaborate system of aqueducts that provided the water for the numerous fountains that were situated throughout the community.

"Primitive" Greek Art: Outdoor Statuary

"Primitive" Greek Art: Outdoor Statuary The primitive Greeks developed the very first freestanding statuary, an awesome achievement as most sculptures up until then had been reliefs cut into walls and pillars. Kouros figures, statues of young, good-looking male or female (kore) Greeks, made up the greater part of the sculptures. Representing beauty to the Greeks, the kouroi were crafted to look rigid and commonly had foot in front; the males were vigorous, powerful, and naked. Around 650 BC, life-sized forms of the kouroi began to be seen. The Archaic period was an awesome point of change for the Greeks as they expanded into new forms of government, formed novel expressions of art, and achieved insights of the men and women and cultures outside of Greece. Throughout this time and other periods of historical tumult, clashes often happened, most notably battles fought between city-states such as the Arcadian wars and the Spartan infiltration of Samos.
