Water Delivery Strategies in Historic Rome

Water Delivery Strategies in Historic Rome Rome’s 1st raised aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was built in 273 BC; prior to that, citizens residing at higher elevations had to rely on natural creeks for their water.Water Delivery Strategies Historic Rome 3839817288.jpg Outside of these aqueducts and springs, wells and rainwater-collecting cisterns were the sole techniques available at the time to supply water to areas of higher elevation. Starting in the sixteenth century, a unique strategy was introduced, using Acqua Vergine’s subterranean sectors to supply water to Pincian Hill. As originally constructed, the aqueduct was provided along the length of its channel with pozzi (manholes) constructed at regular intervals. Although they were initially developed to make it possible to service the aqueduct, Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi started using the manholes to accumulate water from the channel, opening when he obtained the property in 1543. Apparently, the rainwater cistern on his property wasn’t adequate to fulfill his needs. Thankfully, the aqueduct sat directly below his residence, and he had a shaft established to give him accessibility.

Keep Your Landscape Fountain Clean

Keep Your Landscape Fountain Clean Water fountains will keep working a long time with regular cleaning and maintenance. It is easy for foreign items to find their way into outdoor fountains, so keeping it clean is vital. Another factor is that water that is exposed to sunlight is vulnerable to growing algae. To prevent this, take vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, or sea salt and add straight into the water. Bleach can also be put into the water, however this is not an ideal option as it can harm birds or other animals.

Experts recommend that the typical garden fountain undergoes a thorough scrubbing every three-four months. The first task is to get rid of all of the water. When you have done this, wash inside the water reservoir with a gentle detergent. A helpful tip is to use a toothbrush if there are little hard-to-reach spots. Do not leave any soap residue inside or on the fountain.

Calcium and fresh water organisms could get inside the pump, so you should disassemble it to get it truly clean. You might want to let it soak in vinegar for a few hours to make it quicker to wash. Neither rain water nor mineral water contain components that will accumulate inside the pump, so use either over tap water if possible.

One final trick for keeping your fountain in top working condition is to check the water level every day and make sure it is full. Permitting the water level to get too low can result in damage to the pump - and you certainly do not want that!
