Water Transport Strategies in Historic Rome

Water Transport Strategies Historic Rome 40539811.jpg Water Transport Strategies in Historic Rome Previous to 273, when the 1st elevated aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was established in Roma, inhabitants who resided on hillsides had to go further down to gather their water from natural sources. When aqueducts or springs weren’t available, people dwelling at higher elevations turned to water drawn from underground or rainwater, which was made possible by wells and cisterns. In the very early 16th century, the city began to utilize the water that flowed below the ground through Acqua Vergine to provide drinking water to Pincian Hill. Pozzi, or manholes, were built at standard intervals along the aqueduct’s channel. While these manholes were provided to make it easier to preserve the aqueduct, it was also feasible to use containers to pull water from the channel, which was employed by Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi from the time he acquired the property in 1543 to his death in 1552. Although the cardinal also had a cistern to get rainwater, it didn’t produce a sufficient amount of water. That is when he made the decision to create an access point to the aqueduct that ran directly below his residential property.
