Bernini’s First Italian Fountains

Bernini’s First Italian Fountains 132394119.jpg Bernini’s First Italian Fountains Bernini's earliest water fountain, named Barcaccia, is a masterful work of art seen at the foot of the Trinita dei Monti in Piaza di Spagna. To this day, you will find Roman locals and vacation goers occupying this spot to revel in chit chatter and being among other people. Bernini would without a doubt have been happy to know that people still flock to what has become one the city's most fashionable areas, that around his amazing water fountain. Dating back to around 1630, Pope Urbano VIII mandated what was to be the very first water fountain of the artist's career. An enormous vessel slowly sinking into the Mediterranean is the fountain's main theme. Period writings dating back to the 16th century indicate that the fountain was built as a memorial to those who lost their lives in the great flooding of the Tevere. Absenting himself from Italy only once in his life for a long-lasting period of time, in 1665 Bernini voyaged to France.

The First Water Features

The First Water Features Water fountains were at first practical in purpose, used to bring water from rivers or springs to cities and villages, providing the inhabitants with fresh water to drink, bathe, and cook with. A supply of water higher in elevation than the fountain was needed to pressurize the flow and send water squirting from the fountain's spout, a system without equal until the late 19th century. Typically used as monuments and commemorative edifices, water fountains have inspired men and women from all over the world all through the centuries. Rough in design, the very first water fountains did not look much like modern-day fountains. Crafted for drinking water and ceremonial functions, the initial fountains were very simple carved stone basins. Natural stone basins as fountains have been discovered from 2,000 B.C.. The spray of water appearing from small spouts was pressured by gravity, the only power source creators had in those days. The location of the fountains was determined by the water source, which is why you’ll normally find them along aqueducts, canals, or rivers. The Romans began constructing ornate fountains in 6 BC, most of which were bronze or natural stone masks of animals and mythological characters. The remarkable aqueducts of Rome delivered water to the eye-catching public fountains, many of which you can visit today.

The History of Wall Fountains

The History of Wall FountainsHistory Wall Fountains 40465988061931082.jpg Pope Nicholas V, himself a learned man, ruled the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 to 1455 during which time he commissioned many translations of old classic Greek documents into Latin. He undertook the beautification of Rome to make it into the worthy seat of the Christian world. In 1453 the Pope commissioned the rebuilding of the Aqua Vergine, an ancient Roman aqueduct which had carried clean drinking water into the city from eight miles away. Building a mostra, a grandiose commemorative fountain built by ancient Romans to memorialize the arrival point of an aqueduct, was a custom revived by Nicholas V. At the bidding of the Pope, architect Leon Battista Alberti undertook the construction of a wall fountain in the place where we now find the Trevi Fountain. Modifications and extensions, included in the restored aqueduct, eventually supplied the Trevi Fountain and the well-known baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navona with the necessary water supply.
